While the surface will harden quickly, concrete actually retains a lot of water and takes up to a full year to fully cure and gain its maximum strength. Because of this, it is critical to limit the weight you put on the concrete during the first year—please keep heavy vehicles like moving vans, school buses, or garbage trucks off the new surface.
Do I need a permit for a new patio or driveway?
Generally, replacing an existing driveway or pouring a standard patio at ground level does not require a city permit. However, if you are significantly widening a driveway, altering the city boulevard, or building a raised concrete structure, a permit may be required.
What is the best way to maintain my concrete surfaces during Alberta winters?
Alberta is classified as a severe weather category for concrete. Instead, use natural sand for traction. You can even find free community sandboxes through the City of Edmonton. To prevent rapid deterioration, pitting, and spalling, absolutely avoid applying de-icing salts or lawn fertilizers to the concrete. Keep in mind that salt from the undercarriage of your car can also cause damage. If we need to patch or repair a section, the repair concrete must be extremely dry to prevent shrinking, meaning the patch will typically be darker and will not perfectly match the original surface.
